Home Consuming the City 2016 Lecture

Lecture

20160430_172744

How do different groups consume (in) the city? Interesting speakers show how different groups use and experience the city, specifically focussing on the everyday practices of both elderly and children. How and where do they live, work, and play?

Professor Kevin Ward (University of Manchester) provides a theoretical foundation by sharing his expertise on comparative research on urban policy. How can cities learn from each other and their efforts to create inclusive urban environments? From his more recent work, Ward specifically addresses the challenges of  the ageing city. How do elderly live in the city?

Dr. ir. Lia Karsten (University of Amsterdam) shares insights from her research on children and young families in the city. Where do parents let there children play? What urban amenities are families looking for? And how can this change a neighborhood?

The work of both scholars is combined with Amsterdam-based examples. Photographer Vera Duivenvoorden and curator Marlies Buurman (WOW Amsterdam) share their project KIJK Amsterdam, which challenges children to photograph their neighbourhood. What does the city look like through the eyes of this often-unheard group?

The evening ends with the screening of the documentary FOODSTRUCTION, and the preview of the exhibition Sounds beyond Cities. All guests receive an accompanying magazine on the entire collection of research projects conducted by the RMUS students. The evening is moderated by Dr. Hebe Verrest (University of Amsterdam) and master’s student Afra Foli.
