Home Consuming the City 2016 Exhibition

Exhibition

In an era of globalization, cities are generally losing their local uniqueness. Are we still able to visually distinguish cities such as New York, Amsterdam, Istanbul, and Berlin? If not, what role do sounds play in identifying these cities? Do cities have the capability to define themselves by the sounds they produce?

Role of sound
In the exhibition Sounds beyond Cities, the viewer is given the opportunity to experience urban scenes by relying on both their sight as well as their hearing. Various urban scenes are presented, using photographs from different cities across the globe. Are you able to distinguish the cities visually? How does sound play into this?

Soundcloud
Every scene is photographed in four different cities. One of the photos matches the accompanying sound. To have the full experience, we advise you to download the Soundcloud app on to your phone. During the exhibition, you can find the different sounds in our account. So bring your own headphones and walk your way through the different scenes.

We use our card to open the gates and descend into the ground. We wait on the platform. The doors slide open. Mind the gap. Hold on firmly. Next stop.
